Department of Performing Arts presents “West Side Story,” Oct. 27-29, Nov. 4-6

The Department of Performing Arts will present “West Side Story” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27-Saturday, Oct. 29 and Friday, Nov. 4-Saturday, Nov. 5 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus. A matinee performance is scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6.

“West Side Story” is the tale of two young idealistic lovers who find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the Jets, second-generation American teens and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. Its exciting, sophisticated score by Bernstein and Sondheim is considered Broadway’s finest and its songs are part of the nation’s musical heritage. The production is directed by Catherine McNeela, with choreography by Lynne Kurdziel Formato. Musical direction is provided by Kenneth Lee.

Tickets for the performance are $12, or free with Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased at the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open from 12:30 p.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
