Elon receives historic preservation award

Elon University has received the 2005 Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit for its commitment to historic preservation during the renovation of several facilities on South Campus. The award is presented by the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina.

Helen Walton in Elon’s math department wrote Elon’s proposal for the award, one of 12 presented annually. Walton’s proposal highlighted the university’s efforts to preserve historic buildings on South Campus, including Johnston Hall, built in 1926 and on the National Register of Historic Places, and Holt Chapel, built in 1957. Johnston Hall now houses offices for institutional advancement and the alumni and parent relations offices, as well as the new Alumni Center, while Holt Chapel will be used for religious and spiritual life functions and various student organization meetings.

University representatives will officially receive the award during a luncheon Saturday, Oct. 29 in Gastonia.
