Elon Greeks earn national recognition at conference

National honors and recognitions were received by members of the Elon fraternity and sorority community at the recent Mid-American Greek Council Association (MGCA) Conference in Chicago. Details...

MGCA is the premier national leadership conference for fraternity and sorority governing council officers. Participants in the conference come from more than 30 U.S. states. Elon has attended this annual leadership conference for the past two years.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the governing council for the five historically African-American fraternities and sororities at Elon, received the 2005 Overall Council Excellence award and was named the top NPHC Council in the nation. In addition, the Elon NPHC received recognition for Excellence in Membership Intake, Council Management, Academic Achievement, and Community Service.

The Panhellenic Council, the governing council for sororities at Elon, received recognitions for excellence in Membership Recruitment, Community Service and Philanthropy, Risk Reduction and Management, Self Governance and Judicial Affairs, Academic Achievement, Council Management, and Leadership and Educational Development. The Elon Panhellenic Council was also named as a Finalist for the 2005 Sutherland Award for Overall Excellence for Panhellenic Councils.

The Interfraternity Council, the governing council for fraternities at Elon, received recognitions for excellence in Community Service and Philanthropy, Leadership and Educational Development, Risk Reduction and Management, and Self Governance and Judicial Affairs. The Elon Interfraternity Council was also named a Finalist for the 2005 Jellison Award for Overall Council Excellence.

In addition to the following recognitions, the councils were also recognized for five Best Practices for the following programs: Elon Hazing Prevention Week, Greek Kids Day at the Football Game, the Greek “Stall Street Journal” newsletter, the NPHC Academic Challenge Program, and the IFC Book Scholarship.

The final recognition received at the MGCA Conference was the naming of Carrie Whittier, director of Greek Life, as the Outstanding Greek Professional for 2005. This award is presented to one professional a year who exemplifies professionalism and leadership in working with fraternity and sororities communities. This is a significant accomplishment for Carrie as well as the fraternity and sorority community at Elon.
