Elon’s Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, inducted 40 new members in special ceremonies at the Wood Center on Wednesday evening, April 12.
Professor Kerstin Sorenson, the chapter’s faculty advisor, led the current faculty and student members in welcoming 31 juniors and 10 seniors into the society. Founded in 1920 at the University of Texas at Austin, Pi Sigma Alpha’s primary purpose is to “stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science,” as well as to bring together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics. Membership requires outstanding academic performance and civic service.
Professor Richard Landesberg, assistant professor of communications at Elon, whose undergraduate degree from American University was in political science, addressed the chapter on “Cynicism and You in the 21st Century.”
The chapter’s next activity will be a “Political Picnic” on Friday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m. outside of Gray Pavilion. The chapter invites all international students and faculty, as well as all political science majors and minors, and any others in the campus community who appreciate the need to better understand the role of politics and government in human societies.
