Kernodle Center receives awards

The Kernodle Center for Service Learning has received several awards recently.

From the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club

Community Award- Aug. 30

  • Given to the Kernodle Center For Service Learning at their 17th Annual Steak and Steak fund-raiser and awards dinner held at Ramada Inn.
  • The keynote speaker was Dave Blank, Athletics Director.
  • The award was presented by Sherri Henderson and accepted by Katie Filkins, student LINCS. (Leaders In Collaborative Service)
  • Sherri spoke about the core partnership shared with the Kernodle Center for Service Learning who sends student volunteers to tutor, come through Academic Service-Learning courses and offer one-time service events and projects.
  • She said that over 80 students a year are involved in the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club activities.
  • She commended Katie Filkins for her efforts in coordinating and orienting Elon student volunteers to help meet club needs.

Kaboom award for support and participation in the Sept. 28 playground build.

  • Given to Elon University at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on the playground accepted by Dr. Smith Jackson and will be hung in the Kernodle Center for Service Learning. Members from NAA and Forresters, Larrry Sharpe, County Commissioner and Stephen Ross, Mayor were present.
  • AZD and Emily Buckley were given a similar award for their vision and efforts in starting the fundraising efforts for the playground by raising $7,500.
  • AZD had over 40 students participate during the day and there about 20 other Elon students worked, as well.
  • 20 Elon faculty and staff participated in the build day including 12 staff from Student Life.
  • Tammy Cobb, Outreach Coordinator for the Kernodle Center for Service Learning is a Council member for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Piedmont Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross- Golden Heart Award, Sept. 29

  • Given to the Kernodle Center for Service Learning at the Annual Volunteer Luncheon at Lake MacIntosh and accepted by Tammy Cobb, Outreach Coordinator.
  • The Golden Heart Award is given to the organization with the highest number of units of blood collected. This past year, 381 units of blood were collected at the Elon University blood drives.
  • This year’s blood drives are coordinated by Jenna Onasko, and Anna Reynal who volunteer in this leadership position with the Kernodle Center and EV!. Tammy Cobb spoke briefly about these students who recruit from Elon University faculty, staff and students and accepted the award on their behalf.
  • Upcoming Blood Drives are scheduled for Oct. 24 and 25 from 9-2 in McKinnon Hall.
