Men’s tennis team wins Southern Conference championship

The Phoenix (18-2 overall, 9-0 SoCon) took all nine matches from the Wildcats (6-14, 1-6) en route to its ninth consecutive triumph. Elon shared the 2006 SoCon regular season title with Furman, but fashioned an unbeaten run through league competition this season to secure sole claim to the 2007 crown.

In singles action, Damon Gooch defeated Flaviu Simihaian 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Anuwat Dalodom dispatched John Bolton 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, Mason Schermerhorn upended Scott Myers 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, Sebastian Bredberg beat Ethan Jaffee 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, Gustaf Asplund foiled Eric Noble 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Austin Fenn ousted Sam Burns 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

In the doubles, Gooch and Schermerhorn blanked Bolton and Simihaian 8-0 at No. 1, Dalodom and Fenn turned back Burns and Jaffee 8-3 at No. 2 and Asplund and Kevin Colin topped Noble and Phillip Compeau 8-2 at No. 3. The setback marked Davidson’s only 7-0 loss of the season.
