Catholic Eucharistic chapel blessed during ceremony

A blessing was held Monday, April 30 for the new Catholic Eucharistic chapel, located in Holt Chapel on Elon’s South Campus.

Father Gerry Waterman, Elon’s Catholic campus minister, led the brief
ceremony. The chapel, located in a small room adjacent to the Holt
Chapel sanctuary, offers a quiet place of prayer and reflection for
Catholic members of the Elon community.

“It is our hope many students will come and pray and be refreshed,”
said Fr. Waterman. The small chapel, or “portiuncula,” which means
“little portion,” is a chapel within a chapel. The original Portiuncula
Chapel, located within the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in
Assisi, Italy, was a favorite place of St. Francis of Assisi.

Elon’s portiuncula includes a crucifix and tabernacle donated by St.
Adalbert Church in Elmhurst, Queens, NY, the same church where Waterman
served his first assignment as a priest from 1984 to 1988.

Phoenix Card access to the chapel is available to students, faculty and
staff who request it. Contact Fr. Waterman at 278-7355 or
gwaterman@elon.edu for information.
