LSM class raises more than $4,000 for organizations

Dr. Hal Walker’s leisure and sport management event management class organized two special events this semester that raised $4,100 for two local organizations.

The first event was “Bark in the Park” – an assortment of activities centered around the crowds expected at the Elon-University of North Carolina baseball game scheduled for Wednesday, April 11. Hard rains forced the cancellation of the game and the class was forced to exercise their rain option for the game against Furman on Friday, April 13. Although the crowd was much smaller than that expected for the Carolina game, spirits remained high and the event was very successful, with $1,900 raised through a variety of sponsorship donations and in-game activities planned by the class.

Special thanks go to Gold Sponsors of the event: Glen Raven Mills, Windsor upon Stonecrest Apartments, the Burlington Royals, Bojangles, and Domino’s Pizza of Elon.  Bev Gude and Pat Woods, representatives from the Humane Society of Alamance County, are pictured above receiving the event proceeds from class members.

The second event planned by class members was “Run for a Reason” – a 5K race held on the Elon campus.  Almost 100 runners, and a few dogs, were on hand for the race, held on Friday, April 20.  Special thanks to the major sponsors of this event: American City Business Journals: Triad Business Journal, Triangle Business Journal and the Sporting News; Chandler Concrete; West End Enterprises, Inc.; Tan Oasis, Inc., Acorn Inn, and Paradise Printers.

A beautiful day and great energy were exhibited by the event planners, as well as the individual and team registrants.  The students planning this event are pictured with their $2,100 check for the NC Children’s Hospital of Chapel Hill.  More than $21,000 has been raised through this event planning class over the past 5 years, for a wide variety of community partners.
