Four seniors in the Sociology/Anthropology Department accompanied sociology professors Tom Arcaro and Lisa Peloquin to the annual Association for Humanist Sociology conference. The conference was held in Henderson, NV Oct. 25-28.
Sociology majors Alli VanKanegon, Alyssa Morley, Carroll Martin, and Seth Gleeson were student presenters at the conference.
Alli, Alyssa, and Carroll presented the paper “Goffman Goes Global: Complexities to Region Behavior that Establish the ‘Cyberstage Continuum’.” This paper was a continuation of a piece they presented at last year’s AHS conference in St. Louis, MO.
Seth Gleeson’s presentation was named “College Students’ Attitudes Toward Class: Does it Exist? Or Does it Foster a Classless Society?”
Arcaro delivered a presentation about Periclean Scholars (“Pericleans for Life: Transforming Student Lives and Changing the World”), and showed the documentary “On Our Own.” This is a film made by former Elon staff member Marion Aitcheson, and it is about growing up in a children’s home in Eisenach, Germany.
Peloquin’s presentation focused on the human relationship with nature and was titled, “Commodify Your Ascent? Earth Centered Pedagogies, Grounded Knowledge, and Social Change.”
In addition to presenting their own work, students and faculty at the conference had the opportunity to meet humanist sociologists from other states and countries.
