Communications students win SPJ awards

Two School of Communications broadcast students placed well in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards competition for the 2007 calendar year.

The students were
recognized for their reporting and photography and were awarded certificates
March 29 during SPJ’s Spring Conference at Washington and Lee University.

Brian Fink won first place in the
television sports photography category for his highlights package from a
football game between Elon and Wofford. As a first-place winner, Fink advances
to the national round of judging, which takes place this month. National winners
will be announced in May.

Mitch Pittman won second place in
both the television sports reporting (“On Your Mark, Get Set, Pray!”) and
television feature photography (“Kay Yow’s Fight”) categories.

This year, collegiate journalists
submitted more than 3,400 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions.
