Hatcher Writes Story about Worship Sessions at Durham Prison

Anthony Hatcher
Hatcher wrote the story as part of his summer internship with the newspaper, which he’s doing for professional development.

Associate professor Anthony Hatcher had a story about worship sessions at the Durham Correctional Center published in the Durham Herald-Sun June 28.

 The story starts:

The steamy prison cafeteria is noisy with the buzz of Bible verses being discussed over the roar of fans whirring in the stifling heat of the building.

Each Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Yokefellow Prison Ministry gathers at Durham Correctional Center for an evening of talk, prayer and gospel singing by a seven-member house band at the all-male institution.

The Rev. Joseph Lyon Jr., coordinator of the Yokefellow ministry at this minimum security facility off Guess Road in north Durham, announces the evening’s topic: “Does prayer influence God?”

Tonight’s topic comes from the Book of Matthew. Chapter seven, verse seven reads, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
