Voices of Discovery: Duke Energy Carolinas president visits Sept. 9

Ellen T. Ruff, president of Duke Energy Carolinas, comes to Elon on Sept. 9 for the first in a series of talks this fall by experts in the field of science and mathematics. Ruff will discuss her company’s efforts to develop renewable energy, new nuclear and other types of power generation to create solutions for the energy problem facing Americans.

Ruff started with Duke Energy (formerly Duke Power) in 1978.

“Our Energy Future: Trade-Offs and Choices”

DATE: Tuesday, September 9, 2008
TIME: 7:30 p.m.
LOCATION: McCrary Theatre in the Center for the Arts on N. Williamson Avenue

Ruff sees the energy picture as a “big puzzle” with many factors in play, such as appropriate policies on the federal, state and regional levels, and the need to make energy adequate, affordable, clean and efficient.

Named president of Duke Energy Carolinas in 2006, Ruff serves on the executive committee of the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry’s board of directors and was appointed by Gov. Mike Easley in 2006 to a three-year term on the North Carolina Economic Development Board.

The Voices of Discovery speaker series, sponsored by Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, brings to campus prominent scientists and mathematicians who have left a mark on the way people view the world. Speakers share their experiences as part of Elon’s commitment to create a science-conscious community and to help students be informed citizens.
