A “Pumpkin Toss” charity event sponsored by the Physics Club earlier this month raised $59 and 52 nonperishable goods for Loaves & Fishes Christian Food Ministry in Burlington.

The Nov. 2 event on South Campus attracted dozens of spectators and more than a few jack-o’-lanterns that splattered across the field as students used handmade trebuchet, a catapult-like device often used in medieval warfare, to send the gourds to their demise.
Organizers said the pumpkin toss was an environmentally friendly way to dispose of old jack-o’-lanterns that would otherwise be dumped in landfills.
“The important thing is that we fostered a sense of community and were able to help out and give back to our community,” said Brenton Davis, and Elon junior with the Physics Club.
Fox 8 News (High Point, N.C.) and the Times-News of Burlington covered the event.
