Professors Liz Bailey, Steve Bailey, Barry Beedle, Wally Bixby, Joyce Davis, Eric Hall, Caroline Ketcham and Paul Miller presented original research with students at the 2009 Southeast American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) Annual Conference in Birmingham, AL.

Students Kristin Arfman, Seanna Baird, James Burns, Grace Chao, Danielle Gilbert, Erin Lewandowski, Matt Scoggin, Brittany Vanzanten, Katie Volkerding and Dana Wolff all participated as investigators in this scholarship.

Elon University alumnus and current University of Georgia graduate student Tara Mulcahy (’08) was also a collaborator.

Liz Bailey and Steve Bailey led a symposium along with Robert McMurray (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Erin Banks (NCSU) titled “If exercise is medicine, how do we get people to do it? A look at community-based programs.”

The following research presentations were made;

Seanna Baird, Danielle Gilbert, Eric Hall, Wally Bixby & Paul Miller: “Influence of body consciousness on affective and emotional responses to exercise while viewing television programs.”

Barry Beedle & Brittany Vanzanten: “No difference in sleep apnea index between college football linemen and adults.”

James Burns, Eric Hall, Grace Chao, Wally Bixby & Paul Miller: “Effects of 7-week exercise intervention on dimensions of self-concept and body image”.

Grace Chao, Paul Miller, James Burns, Wally Bixby & Eric Hall: “The effects of conjugated linoleic acid supplementation and exercise on contractile performance and lean mass.”

Matt Scoggin, Paul Miller, Steve Bailey, Tara Mulcahy, Wally Bixby & Eric Hall: “Impact of protease supplementation on perceived pain and exercise affect following the onset of DOMS.”

Katie Volkerding, Caroline Ketcham & Joyce Davis: “Biomechanical and proprioceptive differences between dancers and non-dancers during drop landings.”

Dana Wolff, Liz Bailey, & Steve Bailey: “Possible mechanisms influencing positive changes in body image after participation in Alamance-Girls in Motion.”

Also in attendance were Elon students Krysta Cosentino (’09), Sarah Foushee (’10), Natalie Moore (’09), Stacie Page (’09), Elon alumni and current graduate students, Lauren Cook (’07; Wake Forest University), Ben Pierce (’07; Wake Forest University), Katie Gallagher (’08; UNC-Charlotte) and Emily Schmitt (’07; UNC-Charlotte).

Several of these investigations were supported through the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (S.U.R.E.) and the Elon University Honors Program.
