Elon Law’s tradition of monthly receptions with the practicing bar continues

On September 10, Elon University School of Law hosted the first in a series of receptions scheduled for the 2009-2010 academic year, welcoming members of the legal profession to meet with law students and faculty. The event marks the fourth year in which the law school has offered the series of monthly networking opportunities.

Many of the attorneys who attended the September 10 event are volunteers in Elon Law’s unique Preceptor Program, through which over 50 experienced lawyers from a broad range of practice settings coach and mentor law students.

Preceptors observe first-year students in law classes, after which they meet with each student to provide feedback, facilitating a reflection process that helps students continuously improve in their preparation and development as aspiring lawyers.

Preceptors also welcome students to accompany them to observe trials, initial client interviews, depositions and mediations.

Students welcome the interaction with practicing attorneys. “I did not know many lawyers when I arrived at law school, so the preceptor program, connecting us to practicing lawyers who could serve as mentors, helped to demystify the practice of law,” said Miriam Heard, a graduate of the Class of 2009.

Preceptors are an integral part of the Elon Law experience. They visit with students through informal social events at the law school, make guest appearances as speakers and panelists, and welcome correspondence with their assigned students.

On Thursday, October 8, Elon Law will host its second monthly reception welcoming preceptors and other guests from the legal community to meet with Elon Law students.

At the October 8 event, the law school will welcome as a special guest Judge A. Robinson Hassell, Special Superior Court Judge, North Carolina Superior Court.

The law school will also unveil a portrait of founding dean emeritus and professor of law Leary Davis.
