Service learning announces 2011 scholar programs

Service-Learning Faculty Advisory Committee announces new Faculty programs designed to encourage integration of service learning into existing courses and encourage research related to service learning.

New Faculty Scholar Program

The Service Learning Faculty Scholar’s program seeks to encourage integration of service and
experiential learning into existing courses. Faculty are encouraged to take this opportunity to
expand experiential learning in one of their courses.

The Scholar’s program accepts 5 to 7 faculty each year, providing instruction and mentoring to
assist faculty members to incorporate service-learning into a course. A stipend of $1,000 is
awarded to each Service-Learning Faculty Scholar.

The due date for a completed application, including the narrative questions, is March 19, 2010.
Scholars will be selected and notified by April 15. A brief orientation meeting will be held later this
spring.

New Research Scholar Program

For faculty who have already participated as a Service Learning Scholar, a new program has been
created to support research in academic service-learning. This new Scholars Program is designed
to assist former Service Learning Faculty Scholars to continue their service-learning work as part of a research project.

Research Scholars will attend training and meetings with new Faculty Scholars and receive support and assistance to develop a research project addressing service-learning. Additional mentoring and assistance in designing and implementing such a research project will be available through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. A $1500 stipend will be awarded to each
Research Scholar.

As an extension of the Service Learning faculty development program, Research Scholars must
have already served as a Faculty Scholar. Completed applications, including the narrative
questions, are due March 19; the Academic Service-Learning
