Clyde Ellis, professor of history, presented his most recent fieldwork and research at the annual meeting of the Western History Association Oct. 13-16.
The paper examined the role played by young women in transforming gendered space in Southern Plains powwow culture between 1945 and 2000. Based on extensive fieldwork and interviews, the research looks specifically at how women reshaped ideas about singing and dancing. Ellis also spoke as an invited panelist at an Oct. 21st Duke University symposium on identity in contemporary American Indian communities.
