Elon students leave Egypt amid civil strife

The six Elon University students in Egypt when demonstrations against the nation's president erupted last week have safely departed the country.

Elon’s students were enrolled at the American University in Cairo for the 2011 spring semester. Five of the six students had been invited by an Egyptian student leader at AUC to his family’s home near the Red Sea and were away from Cairo when the protests started. Those five students left Cairo on Tuesday and will be spending several days in Istanbul, Turkey, until they enroll this month at the University of Haifa in Israel.

The sixth student, whose family lives in Egypt, left the country with his family over the weekend and had not been with the others on the Red Sea. That student’s plans for the spring have not been determined.

For the time being, and in the interest of student and family privacy, Elon University will not be releasing students’ names.
