News and Record: Testing the City Council’s new open meeting rules

From the Greensboro News and Record (2/9/11): Mid-afternoon last Friday, Scoop got word of a meeting between city and county officials on the tax collection hubbub.

Scoop One popped up over the ole gray cubicle wall to inform Scooper Two of said development.

“What?!? Isn’t that a public meeting? We should be there,” said Scooper Two, collecting his coat.

Scoop One furiously paged through her always handy North Carolina Open Meetings Law pamphlet. The meeting — which included Mayor Bill Knight, Councilman Zack Matheny, Commissioner Melvin “Skip” Alston, Commissioner Linda Shaw, City Manager Rashad Young, County Manager Brenda Jones Fox and a pair of attorneys — did not seem to strictly meet the definition of an “open meeting.”
