President Lambert honored as Father of the Year

Elon University President Leo M. Lambert is one of five men being honored with a 2011 Father of the Year award by the Greater Greensboro Area Father’s Day Council.

This is the fifth year that the Council has identified and honored fathers in the Triad region. The Father’s Day Council is a group of volunteers who honor those who enhance the meaning and stature of fatherhood. Through these annual awards, the group raises funds for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The national Fathers Day Council has raised more than $22 million for the charity during the past 22 years.

Those honored as Fathers of the Year are business or community leaders who have served as role models for their children, balancing highly successful careers with the demands of being good dads.

Lambert was named Elon’s eighth president in January 1999 and has led the university while raising two daughters along with his wife, Laurie. Their daughter Callie Lambert Brown is currently a student in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and their daughter Mollie Lambert is a student in Elon’s interactive media master’s program.

The Father of the Year awards will be presented June 3 during a dinner at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. A reception and silent auction benefiting the ADA will precede the event.

Lambert will be honored along with artist William Magnum, attorney Michael A. Scholosser, cardiologist Henry W.B. Smith III and Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John D. Swofford. The honorees will join distinguished past national recipients including President Ronald Reagan, the Rev. Billy Graham, Gen. Colin Powell, USA (Ret.), U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and actor Andy Griffith.
