Sustainability Faculty Scholars – applications due April 22

The Sustainability Faculty Scholars Program will identify, support and recognize faculty who are interested in incorporating or enhancing a focus on sustainable principles and practices in their courses, and exploring a range of pedagogies to develop this theme.

Faculty members will apply for the program by identifying a particular course which they would like to revise to include a component focused on sustainability – its definition, principles, practices and assessment, in a way that is relevant to the discipline to the participating faculty member. The seminar’s application form is below.

Six faculty members from across the University will be selected for the program for the fall, 2011 and spring, 2012 semesters. Professors Janet MacFall and Michael Strickland will lead the seminar, with support from Peter Felten and Elaine Durr. Faculty who have participated previously in the Program will also assist faculty in course development.

Faculty selected to be part of the seminar will be expected to participate in:

An orientation meeting with new and returning Scholars on Friday, August 26, 2011
5 seminars/workshops during the academic year that will focus on sustainability and relevant pedagogies
A full day field trip, to be held during spring semester
A ∏ workshop to be held at the end of the spring semester
A summer book club discussion/lunch, to be held with present and past Scholars
Other activities and resources to be determined by program participants
A meeting to discuss progress mid-fall semester
Continued construction of a Blackboard website with syllabi, teaching materials and other relevant resources

Faculty selected for the program will receive a $1,000 stipend, to be paid during the summer of 2012.

The Sustainability Faculty Scholars program is co-sponsored by the Elon University Center for Environmental Studies, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and the Office of Sustainability with financial support from the Office of Business, Finance and Technology.

An application form is available from Janet MacFall.
