Alan Russell, an associate professor of mathematics, and Amanda Ketner, a senior mathematics major with teaching licensure, presented at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics 2011 Annual Meeting held in Indianapolis, Ind., from April 10-16.
“Great High School Investigations Adapted from College Math Journals” allowed Russell and Ketner an hour to share components of Elon’s senior capstone experience with an international audience including the United Kingdom and Germany. Ketner’s presentation on Bezier curves was the hit of the session and represented her fourth national talk on her multiple undergraduate research projects.
“Papierfalten, Papiroflexia, or Origami: Folding Your Way through School Mathematics” was a 90-minute, hands-on workshop sharing insights gained from Russell’s GST 325: Math Origami course and the results of his grant from the Japan Foundation.
The international audience featured participants from Bermuda, France, China, and Japan. The more than 100 participants worked together to create models investigating school mathematics from algebra and calculus to statistics and geometry.
