Several student organizations and campus departments have partnered to host a number of events in celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2011. Organizers said their goal is to raise awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and to encourage positive action throughout the community.

Screening of Ingredients, a documentary about the local food movement

Saturday, April 16
Screening of Oceans, an ecological drama/documentary filmed throughout the globe to illustrate the vanishing wonders of the sub-aquatic world

Sunday, April 17
Elon Community Garden Work Day
3–5 p.m., Elon Community Garden (next to the Truitt Center)
Volunteering in the garden is a great chance to enjoy the outdoors with friends and learn about growing fruits and vegetables in the North Carolina climate.
Monday, April 18
Landfill on the Lawn
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., West Lawn of Moseley (directly outside of Irazu)
This will be an eye-opening demonstration where students will sort recyclables from a portion of waste generated on campus.

Tuesday, April 19
Sustainable College Coffee!
9:40 – 10:20 a.m.
A number of student groups and partner organizations will be present to share their sustainability message. The Office of Sustainability will have prize giveaways, including reusable shopping bags and CFLs. There will be a water taste test, hosted by the Eco-Reps, to see if YOU can tell the difference between tap water and bottled water. The winners of the Sustainability Video Contest will also be announced!

Elon Community Garden Work Day

Anna Lappé, ‘Diet for a Hot Planet’
7:30 p.m., McKinnon Hall (Moseley Center)
Lappé is respected for her work on sustainability, food politics, globalization and social change. Named one of Time’s “eco” Who’s-Who, Lappé is a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund. Drawing from her latest book, she will describe the links between today’s global food system and climate change and offer inspiration for making sustainable food a catalyst for healing the planet.
Sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Studies, General Studies and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. This event is free and open to the public.
Thursday, April 21
Anna Lappé speaks at College Chapel
9:50 – 10:20 a.m., Whitley Auditorium
Take a break from the busy week, and join us for College Chapel where Ms. Lappé will share her philosophy regarding food production/use and sustainability.
Giving Tree
10 a.m. – 3 p.m., West Lawn of Moseley (Rain location is in Irazu)
Bring unwanted, gently used clothing and small household items to exchange with other members of the Elon Community. Participants do not have to bring something in order to take something. Any remaining items will be donated to a local organization.
