Elon University in the News – Early Spring 2011

Elon University professors, students and alumni continue to make news this spring through their research and campus activities. Notable in March and April was media coverage by the Associated Press of the Elon University Poll, faculty scholarship cited by the Huffington Post and mention of Elon University's sustainability efforts by USA Today.

The following list should not be considered exhaustive and does not include athletics news.

March 2011: Elite magazine: “Small Schools, Big Dreams” profiled students at some of North Carolina’s top colleges and universities – including Elon senior Nicolas Ochsner, who spoke about his time at Elon. Elite is a publication of the Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina.

3/11: Business Journal of the Triad: “Past Inspector General Glenn Fine visits Elon Law” reports on a guest lecture at the law school in downtown Greensboro.

3/12: (Wilmington, N.C.) Star-News Online: “In paperback: ‘This Is Just Exactly Like You’” is the newspaper’s literary blog, Bookmarks, reporting on the release of a paperback edition of associate professor Drew Perry’s debut novel.

3/13: WRAL-TV (Raleigh, N.C.): “Sunshine Week promotes open government, democracy” cites data from a recent Elon University Poll on the support state residents have for making government more transparent. 3/13: (Rock Hill, S.C.) The Herald: “Dad’s actions gave him seat at the counter” was a column written by associate professor Kenn Gaither about the lasting impact of his father’s efforts to desegregate a “whites only” counter at a South Carolina establishment in the early 1960s.

3/15: News 14 Carolina: “In Depth: Dr. Brooke Barnett, Sunshine Day” was a three-minute interview with associate professor Brooke Barnett, executive director of the N.C. Sunshine Center housed at Elon University, in which she discusses the importance of open government records and meetings.

3/15: News 14 Carolina: “New poll shows economy taking heavy toll on Alamance County” reported on the health and wellness findings of a community survey conducted by the Elon University Poll. 3/18: High Point Enterprise: “BOOST or BUST: Loss of textile, furniture plants stokes fear about market showroom deal” quotes economics professor Thomas Tiemann on the effects, or lack thereof, of a real estate transaction involving three furniture showrooms in High Point, N.C.

3/23: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Project will teach entrepreneurship to kids with lemonade stands” previews Lemonade Day on May 7, when entrepreneurship students at Elon will assist local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts with running their own lemonade stands to learn entrepreneurship skills.

4/1: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Mike Berenstain, who is not a bear, visits Elon” reported on the visit to campus by the co-author of The Berenstain Bears series.

4/3: Newsweek: “The Great College Road Trip” is the story of a Pennsylvania high school junior and his parents as they make a visit to several New England colleges. Elon is a school that the family says it plans to visit in the south.

4/4: New York Times: “Admissions Figures on Elon, Harvey Mudd, Brandeis and Nearly 100 Other Colleges” is a post to the Times’ “The Choice” blog, which reports on admissions and financial aid information.

4/4: Live Science: “Clothes and Personal Grooming Can Affect Earnings” reports on research into grooming conducted by faculty in the Department of Economics.

4/9: WCPN Radio/TV Northeast Ohio Public Radio: “Prisoners of Plenty” was a half-hour interview with associate professor Tom Nelson about his film, “Prisoners of Plenty, on the German American Radio Hour. (Not currently posted online.)

4/9: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Celebration honors minority students” includes quotes from Elon freshman Frank Garcia from the 10th anniversary Celebration of Minority Academic Achievement in the Alamance-Burlington School System.

4/9: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “’This is not trash – it’s money’” tells of a visit by Periclean Scholars to the Alamance County Landfill with a Periclean Scholar-in-Residence.

4/10: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Under construction: Major changes coming to Elon” reports on expansion and construction plans on campus scheduled to begin this summer.

4/11: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Satan the blogger: Elon prof’s book explores the workings of evil” is a feature story Devil’s Ink: Blog from the Basement Office by Elon professor Jeffrey C. Pugh.

4/14: Fox 8 WGHP: “Buckley Report: Berenstain Bears” is an extended profile of Mike Berenstain, an author and illustrator who is continuing the legacy of The Berenstain Bears children’s books started nearly 50 years ago by his parents, Stan and Jan. Mike Berenstain’s daughter attends Elon and the report shows footage from his recent visit to the university.

April 2011: The Parent’s Lounge podcast blog: “Learning Disabilities and Special Education” is an interview with professor Linda Wilmshurt and Alan Brue, her co-author on a recent book on special education.

4/15: Charlotte Business Journal: “Planning pays off for Charlotte legal duo” profiles Mark Jetton and Eric Meredith, two Elon law graduates who have started their own firm in North Carolina’s largest city.

4/16: Associated Press (via Greensboro, N.C. News & Record): “New poll: N.C. residents divided on Obama’s performance” shared findings from the latest Elon University Poll looking at job approval numbers for various lawmakers.
