Students aim pies at profs – and cancer

What does revenge taste like? Whipped cream, apparently. Dozens of students took part in “Pie Your Professor” at College Coffee on Tuesday morning in a program sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Seven faculty and staff members took pies to the face at College Coffee on May 3, all in the name of raising money for the American Cancer Society.

Now in its third year, “Pie Your Professor” helped the co-ed organization collect more than $130 for the charity, said junior Trevor Edwards, the fraternity’s treasurer.

It also provided students the opportunity to seek retribution for past course grades that in their assessment were, well, lower than expected. As one student shouted just before throwing a pie, “you ruined my 3.9 GPA!” Others had different reasons for donating the $2 that Alpha Phi Omega charged for each pie.

“It’s a good cause, and last year I walked in when they were finishing, and one of my professors was headed away,” said sophomore Courtland Dooley, a biochemistry major who delivered an foil pan filled with cream to the face of professor Gene Grimley. “This year, I wanted my chance!”

Freshman Essie Lazarus also smeared Grimley. “He’s my chemistry professor and the one that I knew, and he’s really hard,” she added. “I’m just getting my frustration out!”

The seven targets faculty and staff members donned black trash bags to protect themselves from the cream. Claudine Moreau, a lecturer in the Department of Physics, said she owed her participation to an “awesome” teaching assistant, and while she enjoyed herself, the program carried a special meaning.

“We had just lost my mother-in-law to cancer my first semester here (in 2006), so this is important to me,” she said. “It was my daughter’s grandma, so it’s tough. We need to find a cure.”
