On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, members from the four phases of the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program (ICLP) gathered to celebrate their accomplishments from the year and the legacy of Isabella Cannon, the program’s namesake. Cannon’s message for students was to always “think globally and act locally.” Phase IV members showcased how they put Cannon’s belief into action through their culminating projects showing how they have left their legacy at Elon.

Following dinner, the Hilaire Pickett ‘08 Leadership Grant was presented. The grant is awarded to two students in the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program to support students in their junior or senior year in pursuit of leadership internships or legacy efforts. The 2011 awardees were: Christa Muldoon (’13) and Chelsea Yarborough (’12).

Yarborough will put the grant toward her ICLP legacy project by bringing together the various Christian organizations with two projects: first, creating a Christian Coalition to recognize the similarities of the various groups and, second, Yarborough intends to organize a full-day conference with workshops and breakout groups for Christian organizations. Muldoon enrolled in a winter term study abroad course to Honduras this past year where she interacted with an organization, Pronino, that takes children from the streets, rehabilitates them, and cares for them as they grow into adulthood. Muldoon will use the grant to return to Honduras for a two-week period for an intensive internship with the organization.

The evening closed with reflection from leadership fellow, Chelsea Yarborough (’12), who spoke about being authentic and leading with integrity. She spoke of J.C. Watts’ (2011 Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership) message of doing the right thing when no one is looking. Yarborough was met with a standing ovation at the close of her reflection.
