Program Overview
The Isabella Cannon Leadership Program is named for 1924 Elon graduate Isabella Cannon, the first female mayor of Raleigh, N.C. The Cannon Program uses concepts derived from an interdisciplinary approach in order to help students learn and practice leadership.
The four-phase Cannon Program provides opportunities for students to learn how to be effective in leadership roles and processes. We believe that individuals do not need formal positions to be considered leaders, but every act of leadership has the ability to affect individuals, teams, organizations, the community at hand and society at large. The goal of the ICLP, therefore, is to develop students’ understanding of the nature, potential and responsibility of leadership in its attempt to create positive change for the common good.
Leadership is a process that by its very nature sets up a dynamic relationship between leaders and active followers. Leadership involves the need to collaborate with people who work together to create positive change. Ultimately, students in the Cannon Program will learn that they are responsible for their actions and share responsibility for the actions of those they can influence.
It is not enough for this program to educate students about concepts and theories that can be used for leadership. It provides students with learning experiences that enable them to put theory into action for the sake of their organizations, communities and society.
