Alamance Youth Leadership Academy

Program Vision

Alamance Youth Leadership Academy by alamance chamberThe goal of Alamance Youth Leadership Academy is to empower youth through the connections of civic engagement and leadership development for a greater Alamance County.

The Center for Leadership is invested in the development of our youth in the local community. Every summer, Elon University partners with Alamance Chamber, Alamance-Burlington School System, and various local businesses to host the Alamance Youth Leadership Academy summer institute.

Alamance Youth Leadership Academy kicks off its program with a three-and-a-half day leadership institute in June held at Elon University. During this time 90-plus rising 7th graders learn about team building, effective communication, presenting skills, problem solving, and develop core leadership skills that help them identify and plan three possible improvement plans for their school. Elon selects 20 Elon students as student facilitators and one Elon student as the summer institute coordinator to guide these students through this transforming experience. A pair of facilitators work with each school to guide their thinking through the numerous challenges faced during the institute.

AYLA currently serves over 175 7th and 8th graders from 11 different middle schools in Alamance County. This program builds on the summer institute to empower youth with the skills necessary to formulate and execute a campus improvement plan at their school. It is through the facilitation of Elon students that those skills are honed and developed. In addition, the first-year Leadership Fellows facilitate workshops throughout the year to continue to build upon the skills learned during the summer institute and to check in on their school improvement plans.

Quotes from Facilitators

“While AYLA is designed as a leadership program for middle school students, I truly believe the facilitators running the program gain the most leadership experience. There is no better way to develop as a leader than to be in charge of leading a group of middle school students to complete a project and presentation.” – Mike Krueger ‘18

“I enjoyed having the pleasure to meet and work with the kids, having great conversations about their schools, their experiences, and their opinions. It was very humbling to see what these kids are capable of and passionate about changing in their school communities.” – Melody Titus ‘18
