Two Elon Law students selected to participate in 2011 Summer Corps program

Elon Law students Sarah Dixon and Ashley Smith have been chosen to participate in the Equal Justice Works 2011 Summer Corps Program. The program provides law students with funding support for legal projects at qualifying nonprofit public interest organizations. Summer Corps members expand the delivery of critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities across the country on a broad range of issue areas.

The 2011 Summer Corps class represents 163 Equal Justice Works law schools. The law students selected into the program receive a $1,132 AmeriCorps education award upon completion of service at a nonprofit organization. This year’s selection process was especially competitive, with the program receiving a record of 1,898 applications this year.

Dixon and Smith will be working this summer with Legal Aid of North Carolina in Greensboro. Summer Corps members engage in a broad range of issues, including civil rights, community economic development, death penalty, disability rights, housing, domestic violence, education, public benefits and workers’ rights.
