Elon Students Set Out for Fall Semester Abroad with Scholarships

Several Elon students have been awarded scholarships and grants totaling more than $75,000 to help fund their Fall 2011 semester study abroad experiences.

David Gagne has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to help fund his semester study abroad experience in Fall 2011. Gagne, a rising junior from Winooski, VT received $3,000 toward his studies at the University of Ghana, in Legon, Ghana. He is majoring in international studies with minors in anthropology and Spanish.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Lindsay Garrison has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) for Fall 2011. Garrison, a rising junior from West Hartford, Connecticut, is a double major in public administration and public health and is minoring in political science, international studies, and business administration. While in Copenhagen, she will enroll in the public health program at DIS, taking courses such as Public Health in Northern Europe, Health Beyond Borders, The Social Context of HIV/AIDS in Africa, and Human Trafficking in a Global Context.

Molly Curtiss received a $5,000 scholarship from The School for Field Studies (SFS). A rising junior from Brookeville, MD, Curtiss is majoring in Environmental and Ecological Science with minors in Biology and Anthropology. She will participate in the SFS Marine Resource Management Studies program in Turks & Caicos for Fall 2011. Her courses abroad will include Tropical Marine Ecology, Principles of Resource Management, Environmental Policy & Socioeconomic Values and she will also carry out a directed research project.

Several Elon students received scholarships from Semester at Sea. Kevin Beach, a junior Business & Environmental Studies major from Davidson, NC, Alexandra Failla, a junior Psychology major from Scarsdale, NY, Leanna Helton, a junior Computer Science major from Richmond, VA, and Abigail Hamrick, a junior History & Art History major from Charlotte, NC, were among the recipients of Semester at Sea scholarships.

In addition to outside scholarship programs, students received support for international study from Elon. The Isabella Cannon International Centre awarded nearly $25,000 in need-based scholarships to some 20 students for Summer and Fall 2011 programs. A number of students are also recipients of travel grants from Elon’s fellows and scholars programs.

More than 220 Elon students are studying abroad for the Fall 2011 semester. They are enrolled in 35 different programs in 30 countries around the globe.
