Kirstin Ringelberg, associate professor of art history, has been appointed as the first coordinator of the LGBTQ Office at Elon. Ringelberg will collaborate with various offices on campus to further a welcoming and supportive environment for members of the LGBTQ community and provide educational and social programming for the campus.
She will report jointly to the Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students and the Provost’s designee. Her responsibilities include:
- Staying abreast of research and trends in the field of sexual orientation and gender identity (theoretical and applied on university campuses) through professional readings and attendance at conferences, webinars, etc.
- Develop and assist with the resource library.
- Be a resource to faculty and staff on developing programs, components in courses, etc., to enhance student learning and understanding of LGBTQ.
- Serve as a consultant to the Director of Student Development, the Coordinator of Student Development for Violence Prevention, and SAGIC to implement the SafeZone program.
- Collaborate with the Multicultural Center and SPECTRUM on their educational and social programs.
- Have a meeting each semester with members of the LGBTQ community to assess needs and advise the Vice President for Student Life and the Provost’s designee on ways to provide more welcoming, supportive and respective messages, programs and policies.
- Serve on the LRP diversity and global engagement sub-committee.
Ringelberg came to Elon in 2003. She received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Ringelberg is an outstanding teacher-scholar-mentor. She contributes to the Women’s and Gender Studies, American Studies and Asian Studies programs. In 2008, she won the Elon College Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.
