The Oct. 4 College Coffee included churros and other special foods as part of Elon’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, and Sylvia Munoz, director of El Centro de Español is working with student groups to raise awareness through community events.
“We’re collaborating with the Isabella Cannon Centre, Latin American Student Association, Amnesty International and others all around campus,” Munoz says. “We’ve worked with Aramark to get Hispanic-themed food in the dining halls too. Collaborating with everyone has been great, because we’ve been able to get lots of students to participate.”
According to Munoz, many of the events held in September were very successful. These included a talk from Pulitzer Prize-winner Sonia Nazario, a Hispanic tailgate during Family Weekend, and a cooking class in El Centro in which participants learned how to make guacamole and Honduran baleades, a soft taco dish filled with mashed beans, eggs and other ingredients.
The celebrations continue this week with a screening of the documentary “9500 Liberty” and a moderated discussion led by by political science professor Laura Roselle on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in LaRose Digital Theatre. A Zumba dance class will also be held and co-sponsored by Campus Recreation on Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Koury Athletic Center.
