Professor Cindy Fair and Lauren Taylor ’10 had an article published in the most recent issue of the African Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health based on Taylor’s Lumen Scholar and Elon College Fellows research project during her studies at the university.

“Working conditions and perspectives among South African health workers” is a qualitative study that analyzed surveys from 249 nurses and midwives who worked in Cape Town, South Africa, regarding their working conditions as well as their perspectives of the South African Health Administration.

Findings indicated that the majority of participants felt their working conditions were inadequate, facilities were understaffed, and there was a lack of supportive supervision. Further, few nurses or midwives indicated their practice had changed as a result of the new Health Administration. More than half of the participants, however, noted positive changes in HIV/AIDS care including an increase in access to testing.

Participants also indicated that some progress was being made in the number of ARVs available as well as access to ARVs.

Taylor recently completed a graduate program in sexual and reproductive health from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
