“Visualizing Multiculturalism,” an exhibition of student art, will debut to the public at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Multiculturalism Center in Room 221 of the Moseley Center and remain open through 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 5.
The traveling exhibition, which features artwork from students at Elon University and North Carolina A&T State University, will also be shown at the Center for Visual Artists in downtown Greensboro, N.C., and the Frazier Student Art Gallery on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
This project is a collaboration between students from North Carolina A&T’s Digital Art classes, led by assistant professor Roymieco Carter, and Elon’s Digital Media Convergence classes, led by Communications assistant professor Max Negin. The students engaged in a dialogue across campuses, researched the different ways multiculturalism is defined and studied examples from advertising and art. Each student was given the charge to represent culture in a visual form.
The exhibition of their results is meant to continue the dialogue by having students from both campuses meet and discuss their work. By examining their own cultures through visual expression, the project strives to bring into public view how people view their own cultures and to spark a critical multicultural dialogue.
