As a “gender outlaw,” Kate Bornstein insists on saying no to gender, and saying no to systems that rein in, pin down or confine individuals. Bornstein approaches the oppressive binary system with a combination of patience, humor and moral outrage – not to mention a wealth of personal experience.
An author, playwright and performance artist, Bornstein’s works explore queer identity and the unnecessary conformity that reinforces homophobia and transphobia. Her books are taught in more than 120 colleges and universities around the world. A fierce advocate for youth and gender outlaws, she frequently speaks on the subjects of sex, gender and alternatives to teen suicide.
She is best known for her groundbreaking books, Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us, My Gender Workbook and Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws. Bornstein also has two new projects being launched, a memoir and new solo performance piece both titled Kate Bornstein is a Queer and Pleasant Danger.
