Internet Society invites Elon’s School of Communications to report on landmark world technology conference in Switzerland.
An 11-person team including Elon University students, faculty and staff filing real-time and spot documentary journalistic reports from Global INET April 22-24 in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference is a celebration of the Internet Society’s 20th anniversary. It is a gathering of many of the top technology pioneers who created the modern Internet, there to be honored at the inaugural induction ceremony of the Internet Hall of Fame.
Other conference highlights the Elon team will cover at Global INET include panel sessions tackling top Internet issues and keynote talks by Vint Cerf, vice president and chief internet evangelist at Google; Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia; Mitchell Baker, leader of the Mozilla Project; Leonard Kleinrock, a distinguished professor at UCLA who pioneered the technological underpinning of the Internet; and Lynn St. Amour, president and CEO of the Internet Society.
The Elon team that is providing full multimedia coverage of all Global INET sessions and produce real-time Twitter reporting, is led by Janna Anderson, associate professor in the School of Communications and director of the Imagining the Internet Center. The team includes students Jacquie Adams, Nicole Chadwick, Jeff Flitter, Addie Haney, Brandon Marshall, Caitlin O’Donnell, Rachel Southmayd and Rebecca Smith, along with Elon Office of Communications staff members Dan Anderson and Brian Meyer.

The Internet Society or ISOC (http://www.internetsociety.org) is an international, non-profit organization founded in 1992 to provide direction in Internet-related standards, education and policy. Its mission is “to assure the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world.” It is home to the Internet Engineering Task Force and other multistakeholder groups that are continuing to build the ever-evolving global communications network.
The theme of the Global INET conference is “Imagining the Future Internet.” Elon’s Imagining the Internet Center was invited by Internet Society leaders to document the event because its mission to mission to explore and provide insights into emerging network innovations, global development, dynamics, diffusion and governance fits the goals of the event.
Hundreds of policy makers, technologists, government representatives, business executives and civil society leaders will meet in Geneva to discuss the impact of the Internet, and identify and address critical topics that will shape its future. The Internet Society will also name the “Defining Moments of the Internet” at its 20th Anniversary Gala at INET.
