The Elon community will mourn the death of sophomore Jordan West at a Gathering of Friends on Wednesday afternoon.

Message to the Elon community from Smith Jackson, vice president for student life and dean of students:

There will be a Gathering of Friends at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, in Moseley Center room 215, for all who wish to share their feelings of loss and reflect on fond memories and special moments with Jordan West, a member of Elon’s Class of 2014, who died Monday morning.

Jordan died unexpectedly after developing breathing problems in his room at the Crest apartments. His roommates called 911 just before 3 a.m., and paramedics rushed Jordan to Alamance Regional Medical Center where he passed away.

Jordan was the son of Sharon and Hayward West of Williamstown, N.J. He was a marketing major and was among those honored last Saturday at the Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards.

The loss of a classmate, friend and student can be disconcerting. It reminds us how precious is the life of each person in our community. Those who knew Jordan may benefit from speaking with a staff member or counselor. If you need immediate assistance you may reach the university’s Counselor-on-Call at any time (24/7) by contacting Campius Safety and Police at 336.278.5555. During normal working hours, do not hesitate to contact the Chaplain’s Office at 278-7729, Counseling Services at 278-7280 or the Office of Student Development at 278-7200.

Jordan’s family welcomes cards from students, faculty and staff. You may send them to Sharon and Hayward West at 1104 Tamarind Place, Williamstown, NJ 08094. You may also bring them to the Gathering of Friends or drop them off at the Moseley Desk and we will forward them to the West family for you. We will let you know when funeral arrangements have been finalized.

If you have questions or if I can be of assistance, please email me at jacksons@elon.edu or call at 278-7220.
