Matthew Masten ’09 featured in Charlotte Observer story

Charlotte native and 2009 Elon alumnus Matthew Masten was the subject of a story on the Observer's website on Saturday, June 9.

Bennu Productions, the company Masten co-founded with fellow Elon graduate Steven Baker, received a Tony Award nomination for its production of Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man” featuring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, John Larroquette, Candice Bergen, Eric McCormack and Michael McKean. The Tony Awards were broadcast on Sunday, June 10.

The article focuses on Masten’s start in theater at Charlotte’s Myers Park High School and the Matthews Playhouse as well as his time at Elon. Though his first Broadway show didn’t take home the award, Masten told reporter Adam Bell his experience working with the show has been his reward.

“At ‘The Best Man’s’ first preview, Masten opened the Playbill and saw his biography in the credits. He got chills.

‘It was almost bigger than the Tony.'”
