FMA talks financial literacy for college students

The Elon chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) hosted a panel of local financial service professionals on October 3, in the Koury Business Center.

The panelists, who are members of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP), gave two 45-minute presentations about financial literacy pertaining to college students. They focused on two topics, which included managing credit and budgeting, and 401K planning/career planning.

Panelists included:
John Slayton, CFP – Trust Company of the Southy
Kate Larson, CFP – Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc
Barbara Shyloski, CFA, MBA – UBS Financial Services
Michael LoNano, CFP – LoNano Financial Advisors, Inc
Jeff Blaser, CFP – Blaser Investment Management Group, LLC
Sherry McKinney, CPA, CFP, MBA

“The meeting was very successful,” said Brian Sharnsky, president of FMA. “We had 50 students in attendance. Next year, we hope to expand outside of the business school to make the event a school-wide one to teach students how to effectively manage their finances.”

Established in 1970, FMA has become the global leader in developing and disseminating knowledge about financial decision-making. Members include international academics and practitioners.

The next meeting for Elon’s chapter of FMA will be on October 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Koury Business Center, room 355. They will host a panel of SFSP members who will discuss the different areas of finance opportunities.

The FMA typically meets every other Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and anyone interested in joining is encouraged to contact President Brian Sharnsky at bsharnsky@elon.edu or FMA advisor Yilun Shi, assistant professor of finance.
