Expo to provide networking opportunities

More than 70 recruiters and career consultants expected to participate in the Elon Job & Internship Expo Tuesday, March 11.

There will more than 70 recruiters offering career and internship opportunities for students at the Elon Job & Internship Expo in Alumni Gymnasium Tuesday.

The organizations participating, including nonprofit and government agencies, corporations and private employers, will be recruiting Elon students seeking full-time employment and internships. The event, which is from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., is open to all students.

“This event is not just for seniors,” said Tom Brinkely, executive director of the Student Professional Development Center. “Typically, students look at career fairs when they are graduating, but we are trying to get students involved in career planning earlier during their college experience. This really gives students a chance to connect with possible employers for full-time jobs and internships as they consider options for life after Elon.”

Organizations, such as JP Morgan Chase, Fifth Third Bank, GlaxoSmithKline, Vanguard Group and the Peace Corps, will have recruiters present to network with students, answer questions and provide feedback. ESPN and Southwest Airlines will conduct virtual sessions that will give students a chance to connect with a recruiter via Skype.

In addition to networking, students can seek advice from personal appearance consultants who will provide tips about a proper wardrobe for interviews. There will be a stylist present to talk about hair and makeup as well as a consultant offering information about image, presence, communication and etiquette.

Students can sign up for free Elon business cards and get Facebook photos taken at the Expo. They also can learn about on-campus employment and other programs the Student Professional Development Center offers.

More than 1,000 students attended the Elon Job & Internship Expo held in the fall.

“The student turnout was double of what we have had in the past,” Brinkley said. “We’ve really tried to increase the quality and variety of employers that we have at the Expo as well as the number of students who attend.”
