A team multimedia journalism project produced in the fall semester was recognized by the College Media Association.
Ten students from Elon University’s School of Communications were honored with a first place finish in the Best Multimedia category of the College Media Association’s Apple Awards competition for a multimedia journalism project titled “Incarceration in America: An In-Depth Look at the Prison System in the U.S.”
The students who worked on the story were seniors Kate Riley, Grace Elkus, Jason Puckett, Addie Haney, Meredith Browne, Nicole Esplin, Andrew Wilson, Christine Williams, Kristin Martin and Andrew Creech. The in-depth story was produced during their fall semester Multimedia Journalism course, which is led by Communications instructor and coordinator of student media Colin Donohue.
This is the second year in a row Elon students have won first in this specific Apple Awards category. Last year, Rebecca Wickel ’13, Jeff Stern ’14, Ronald Chang ’13 and Claire Esparros ’13 won for their story “Dr. Danieley’s lifetime of maroon and gold.”
This year, 55 stories were entered in the Best Multimedia category, and more than 300 entries were judged across the entire Apple Awards competition. The awards were delivered March 15 at the College Media Association’s annual spring conference in New York.
