Club Sports teams reach new heights in 2013-14

Several Elon University programs traveled to national tournaments while also volunteering closer to campus with community agencies and other outreach initiatives.

Four teams competed at the national level with several others earning spots in regional conference competitions.

Club Tennis competed in April at a national tournament in Surprise, Arizona, finishing play with a #50 national ranking. Men’s Rugby earned a trip in the fall to the National 7’s tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, and athletes concluded their season in Charleston, South Carolina.

Both Men’s and Women’s Ultimate teams received a bid to the nationals tournament in Westerville, Ohio, with Men’s Ultimate finishing in second place and Women’s Ultimate finishing in eleventh place.

New in 2013-14 was the Rivalry Series, which Club Baseball president Ben Koffel conceptualized. His team had not earned a win over rival East Carolina University in three years and Koffel said he believed that crowd support could help the team to victory. He also saw that other clubs needed a greater fan base at key contests throughout the season.

The first Rivalry series game featured Club Baseball up against ECU and more 100 students showed up to help Elon gain a win over ECU. ECU’s coach emailed Campus Recreation the following week to praise Koffel and the climate created by the Rivalry game.
