Men's and Women's Ultimate club teams compete at national tournament

Several athletes received USA Ultimate 2014 College Awards following competition in May in Westerville, Ohio.

Elon University’s sixth-seeded Men’s Ultimate club team fell short against Bentley University in an ultimate Frisbee title match in May at a national tournament in Ohio.

The Elon team dominated its pool with wins over Kenyon (14-6), Bryant (11-8) and Claremont (15-6) before defeating  the University of Richmond (15-13) and Carleton College-GOP (15-13) in the championship bracket to reach the final game where the team fell 15-13.

Elon ended the season with an overall record of 26-3, losing only to Richmond, SUNY-Fredonia and Bentley

The Women’s team made its third appearance at the national tournament.  The women started rough with a day one 12-5 loss against top-seeded Rice University. Rice would later advance to win DIII Nationals.

The remainder of the weekend had the women’s team fall to St. Benedicts (11-5), Georgia College (11-8), and Harding (13-10), eventually rallying in the tournament to take away 12-9 win over Bowdoin.  Overall, the Women’s team was able to break seed and finish 11 in the tournament.

Several of the Men’s and Women’s Ultimate players were named in the USA Ultimate 2014 College Awards with players honored through a peer nomination and voting process. 

Matt Cameron and Andrew Gruninger were named 1 team All-Region in the DIII Atlantic Coast Division.  The Women’s team had several award winners.  Maureen Dougherty was named Player of the Year as well as 1 team All-Region and 2 team winners were Aelish Aoki and Sydney Harris. 

Emily Harrison was named to the All-Freshman team.
