Elon University senior Sheldon Roberson from Spartanburg, South Carolina, died late May 31, 2014, after being struck by an automobile as he was walking along interstate I-85 between High Point and Greensboro.

Roberson, a theatre design and production major, was returning to Spartanburg after a weekend wedding and had wrecked his car off the roadway about 200 yards from where he was struck.

Roberson had taken the spring semester off and was working as assistant to the designer, stitcher, and wardrobe at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. While at Elon he was a member of the Gospel Choir, the Praise Team, and the assistant costume designer for the recent Ragtime production. In an email to the campus community, Vice President for Student Life Smith Jackson said Roberson’s faculty and peers described him as a positive and very well-liked person who was meticulous in his work, often setting the bar for his fellow students.

Jackson asked for the community to keep Roberson and his family and friends in its thoughts and prayers. The Elon community will be notified of funeral plans and the wishes of the family once information is available.

The McBride Gathering Room in the Numen Lumen Pavilion will be open with staff available from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, June 2, for those who wish to be together in remembrance of Roberson. Chaplains and counselors are available during normal working hours and may also be reached at any time through Campus Safety and Security Office at (336) 278-5555.
