Elon’s 23rd annual Turkey Trot doubles as canned food drive

More than 140 students, faculty, staff and family members registered for a seasonal 5K run/walk that collected food for those in need around Alamance County.

Dozens of runners and walkers took part Friday in an Elon University fall tradition as the 23rd annual Turkey Trot brought the campus community together in a fun effort to collect canned goods for a local nonprofit.

Organized by Campus Recreation, the 5K run/walk cross-country race on South Campus featured an entry fee of two canned good items per runner. Donated items benefit Allied Churches of Alamance County.

“This year’s Turkey Trot went very well,” said Elon junior Riley Billman, a Campus Recreation Lead Team member for planning the event. “I chatted with many participants about how they enjoyed the event … and it’s a way for Elon students to celebrate Thanksgiving by donating food to those in our local community who need it, while also participating in an Elon tradition.”

The Nov. 22 race, which for the first time on South Campus had a start and finish line at the same location, also used chip timing for the second consecutive year. Just over 140 people registered for the race, with 130 completing the course.
