Dozens of runners and walkers took part Friday in an Elon University fall tradition as the 24th annual Turkey Trot brought the campus community together in a fun effort to collect canned goods for a local nonprofit.

The 24th annual Turkey Trot on South Campus and was organized by the Campus Recreation Special Events Committee. Elon senior and Campus Recreation student employee Catherine van Eyck helped organize and direct a Nov. 6 event that featured music, raffle prizes and more.

The Turkey Trot was moved up in the season due to accomodate changes to the academic calendar and other student organization programming, van Eyck said. In previous years, the Turkey Trot was held the Friday before Thanksgiving, but with Elon University for the first time this year giving students the week off prior to the holiday, it made sense to change race plans.

Campus Recreation required the donation of two canned goods for a registration fee. Food was donated to Allied Churches of Alamance County as a way to give back to the community.

For the past two years, Turkey Trot organizers have used Jones Racing bib tags to time runners. Final results are available here.
