Men's soccer hosts Winthrop in opening round of NCAA Tournament

The Elon Phoenix return to the postseason Thursday, Nov. 19, as Winthrop University visits campus for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Be sure to #PackTheFence around Rudd Field for the 7 p.m. game.

For the fourth time in the past five seasons, the Elon University men’s soccer team has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and a shot for the national title.

The Elon Phoenix (13-5-1, 6-2-0 CAA) host Winthrop University (11-6-2) on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field in the tournament’s opening round. The winner of the game advances to play Clemson University (15-2-2).

It is the team’s first at-large bid to the tournament and the second time Elon has hosted an NCAA opening-round game at Rudd Field.

The Phoenix square off against the Big South Conference Tournament champion. Winthrop claimed the Big South title on Sunday in a win over High Point University. Winthrop holds a 6-5-1 record all-time over the Phoenix, but Elon won the most recent contest last year, 1-0, in Wilmington, N.C., at the Wrightsville Beach Classic.

Ticket information for Thursday’s match will be available at elonphoenix.com.

The 2015 season is the team’s second year under the helm of head coach Chris Little. The maroon and gold welcomed back 17 letterwinners from last year’s squad including All-CAA picks in seniors Miguel Salazar, James Brace and Nathan Diehl.
