Hundreds of students gathered in Moseley Center on Sept. 26 to watch the first debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.
Elon University’s first presidential debate watch party has generated national media attention, with a report Tuesday by National Public Radio political reporter Asma Khalid on the event.
Khalid attended the Sept. 26 gathering in the Moseley Center that attracted an estimated 300 students to watch Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump square off in their first debate of the general election. The debate itself set records for viewership, with Elon’s viewing event exceeding the expectations of organizers.
Khalid, who has been focusing on the role of millennials during this year’s elections, said she was drawn to the event because of its nonpartisan nature, saying that many college and university viewing parties are organized by student political party groups on campus.
In her report, Khalid featured her conversation with Noah Kutner ’20, who formerly supported Republican John Kasich who is now undecided, Kenneth Brown Jr. ’19, who is supporting Clinton, and Alex Hager ’19, who says he plans to vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson, but only if it appears Trump will lose to Clinton.
