Reviewer raves about Elon's production of 'You Can't Take It With You'

The Pulitizer Prize-winning play from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart will be performed by Elon's Department of Performing Arts on Jan. 24 and Feb. 1-4.

A recent performance of “You Can’t Take It With You,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning play from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, by Elon’s Department of Performing Arts has generated high praise from reviewer Jackson Cooper.

In his review for the News & Record of Greensboro, critic Jackson Cooper called the production “a refreshingly straightforward production that honors the script’s Depression-era style and jokes without winking at the audience.” The play follows the romance of Alice and Tony as her conventional family and his eccentric clan come together.

“In balancing the multitude of characters and long-winded scenes, director Frederick Rubeck inspires his cast of student actors and local theatre pro (Carroll Michael) Johnson to find warmth in Kaufman and Hart’s script,” Jackson writes.

The next performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 and will be followed by performances on Feb. 1-4. Admission is $13 or free with an Elon ID. Reservations are highly recommended and will be taken at (336) 278-5650 or online at
