Geoffrey Claussen, Lori and Eric Sklut Emerging Scholar in Jewish Studies and assistant professor of religious studies, published a theological essay titled “The Kaddish, the Allegory of the Cave, and the Golden Calf: Meditations on Education and the Encounter with God.”
Grounded in the idea that God is a moral ideal that invites continual reflection and growth, and drawing on the biblical narrative of the golden calf, the Platonic allegory of the cave, and the Jewish prayer known as the Kaddish, the essay considers the activity of study as a potential a path towards God.
The essay appears as a chapter in the volume Kaddish, edited by David Birnbaum and Martin S. Cohen (New Paradigm Matrix Publishing, 2016).
